The Challenges and Vulnerabilities We Face

India is among the world’s most vulnerable and disaster-prone countries with 27 of its 29 states and seven union territories exposed to recurrent natural hazards which include cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, floods and droughts. Climate change and environmental degradation have exacerbated the frequency and intensity of disasters along with increasing the vulnerability of already underserved people. In addition, almost one third of the northern most portion of the country is also affected by civil strife.

In five major natural disasters from 2000-2016 some 17,671 children lost their lives. The 2015-2016 drought in ten states affected an estimated 330 million people, including 37 million children under age five. Recent drought, flooding and COVID 19 in Tamil Nadu, Karnatica and Andra Pradesh has affected many more children and their families adversely. Children are the most at-risk from the impact of natural disasters and conflicts.

A lot of our programs support children through educational initiatives, environmental initiatives, nutritional initiatives and medical initiatives. Many aspects of children’s lives are also affected adversely through disaster including, but not limited to dropping out of school due to schools being used for other purposes such as shelters during natural disasters, missing immunization due to disruption of health services, malnutrition, clean water and sanitation facilities leading to malnourishment and diseases. In addition during humanitarian disasters there are also increased incidences of violence, exploitation and abuse as well as child marriage and child labour in the rural regions we serve.

Considering the frequency of recurrent floods, droughts, severe weather or conflict in different locations across India, and particularly the conditions prevalent in South India, Canadians Sharing Charity is responding to emergency needs often. Our frequency of charitable support for women and children and families, particularly in the marginalized communities we work in, is growing year over year.

Flooding in Tamil Nadu

Unseasonally strong monsoon rains caused major flooding throughout Tamil Nadu.  From Vellore to Chennai vast regions were flooded, causing massive property loss and dislocation for thousands of families.  On top of this devastating weather COVID – 19 was harshly ravaging everyone, closing schools and businesses and causing massive famine and loss of life.  Canadians Sharing Charity was there, donating food, blankets, water, medicines and whatever we could to minimize the impact of the floods.
