Cancer … it’s the diagnosis we all dread. Now, imagine living in rural southern India with limited access to cancer care. At the local hospital, patients have access to an oncologist, chemotherapy and surgery. However, if radiation therapy is required, the patient has no choice but to leave their home and community. This move places significant emotional and financial stress on both the patient and their loved ones.

High treatment costs and the need to travel often cause patients to abandon their treatment, putting their life at risk.

OVERVIEW OF HEALTH CONDITIONS IN INDIA

Not only does cancer affect the body; it affects mental health, livelihood, family, and much more.

In India, one in nine people are likely to develop cancer in his/her lifetime. The National Cancer Registry Program in India reported in 2022 that lung and breast cancers were the leading sites of cancer in males and females, respectively. Among the childhood (0-14 yr) cancers, lymphoid leukemia (boys: 29.2% and girls: 24.2%) was the leading cancer location. The incidence of cancer cases is estimated to increase by 12.8 per cent in 2025 as compared to 2020.

In India, people diagnosed with cancer and their families often need practical and emotional support programs throughout the entire cancer journey: diagnosis, treatment, recovery and remission. For many in India, these programs are unaffordable.

Cancer often requires relatively expensive, complex, multimodal medical treatment for extended periods, leading to household impoverishment, treatment abandonment, and, too often, poor outcomes, especially if the disease is detected at a later stage or patients cannot adhere to a full regime of treatment.

This cancer system, called a LINAC, is for The Sri Narayani Hospital and Allied Medical Services Group.  The Hospital Group’s motto is “Service With Love” and the purpose of this organization is to decommercialize medicine and make quality health care accessible while providing excellent technical care.  Sri Narayani Hospital incorporates human values in medical care and spiritual well being as a medical concept.
